Les freins et les promoteurs à la vaccination contre les papillomavirus humains, selon les parents de jeunes filles âgées de 11 à 19 ans et les médecins généralistes : une étude qualitative par focus group en Isère et en Savoie

Abstract : ln 99% of cases, cervical cancers result from human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, 70% are caused by HPV types 16 and 18. ln France in 2014, vaccination coverage was 17%. The purpose of this study is to identify barriers and facilitators to HPV vaccination of girls aged 11 to 14 and up to their 20th birthday in the case of remedial vaccination, according to the views of general practitioners and young girls' parents, in Isère and Savoie. METHODS: This is a qualitative study using focus groups (FG). From January to May 2016, 10 FG discussions took place in Isère and Savoie with general practitioners and young girls' parents. There were 50 participants. Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim, followed by a thematic analysis. RESULTS: Four themes emerged. Parents lack knowledge on HPV infection and vaccine. The medical community recommends HPV vaccination and doctor-patient relation is essential in the vaccination process. Factors related to the vaccine are parents' fear of side-effects and doctors' doubts concerning vaccine efficacy. Society and habits influence the perception of vaccination, highlighting the importance of patients' environment. CONCLUSION: lt would be interesting, based on this data, to carry out an interventional study to improve patients' information given by the general practitioner and the school system and to improve readability of scientifically validated information.
