Inquiétudes et connaissances des parents face à la fièvre de l’enfant de plus de trois mois

Abstract : Introduction: fever is a common symptom in childhood, most often associated with benign pathologies, but is a source of concern for the parents. However, they are the first care providers, and this anxiety can cause mistakes and inappropriate behaviors. Our study aims to identify the reasons for anxiety in parents consulting the emergency department (ER) for their febrile child, and to analyze their knowledge about fever. Materials and methods: we conducted an observational study between July and October 2016 in ER of Agen’s hospital. A questionnaire was distributed to the parents of every child older than three-month admitted in the ER for fever. The questionnaire consisted in four parts: the first two identified the reasons for concern (primary and secondary), the third describes the socio-demographic data of the parents, and the last evaluate their knowledge about the fever and its management. Results: 100 questionnaires could be exploited. The average age of the children was 3 years and 5 months, with 84% under 6 years old. The main cause of parental concern was the ineffectiveness of antipyretic therapy. Secondary sources of concern were the duration of the fever and the uncertainty about its origin. Children were accompanied by their mother in 70% of the cases. Mean age of the parents was 32 years, 85% were living in couples, 33% were unemployed. About their knowledge, 58% could correctly define fever and most of them had a thermometer.76% used paracetamol as a first-line treatment and 80% used non-medication methods as a therapeutic complement. Discussion: several information campaigns attempted to get key messages to parents without any real impact on their knowledge and behavior. It is possible to identify the main reasons for parents' concern about childhood fever and to gather them in an information sheet. This one could be distributed to both emergency department and in general practice follow-up?
