Profils et motifs d'installation des jeunes médecins généralistes libéraux installés aux Antilles entre 2010 et 2015

Abstract : INTRODUCTION : Demographic data in liberal general medicine are worrisome : fewer and fewer young general practitioners settle down. This disaffection is contextual to profession changes and society mutations. The West Indies, who are suffering from low medical population are particularly vulnerable. AIM : The aim of our study was to draw up the profile of liberal general practitioners who recently settled down and identify their main motivations. METHOD: We conducted a quantitative survey by telephone questionnaire among 56 doctors installed in Guadeloupe and Martinique between January 1st 2010 and December 31st 2015. RESULTS : 58,9 % of the doctors were women. 67,9% were from metropolitan France, 53,6 % of them did their internship in West Indies-French Guyana University. About 9 on 10 had replaced before settling down, for 4,1 years on average. The average age of installation of these doctors was 34,1. Most of them were working in group (55,3%), had a secretariat (64,3%), and worked 42,7 hours a week. They were receiving his patients on a mode of mixed consultation. The "opportunity" factor was predominant in their motivations for installation. The choice of the West Indies was mainly justified by the quality of life. The main difficulty concerned the administrative burdens and procedures. DISCUSSION : Our population of neo-installed doctors in the Antilles is largely in line with the national evolutionary tendencies, but distinguishes herself by certain aspects concerning the organization of her consultations and her place of university training. CONCLUSION : This survey, allowing a better knowledge of General practitioners recently installed, is a prerequisite for better readability of the evolution of primary care offer. It can serve as a tool for projects to promote the facilities by local authorities.
