Les particularités de l’exercice officinal à l’Ile de la Réunion

Abstract : The supply of drugs on the island of Réunion is specific due to the insularity of the territory; it is a French department located 9000 kilometers away from Paris. Its pharmacies show singularities in both aspects of the profession: on the social side with its public health mission, and on the economic side. The public health mission adapts to the patients and their pathologies. The supply of drugs and the stock management are more complicated due to high costs, transport time and stock shortage risks. The selling prices are calculated by applying an add-on factor to the metropolitan prices. This factor compensates costs related to transport and overstocking. By using income statements, we conducted a comparative analysis of the financial performances between pharmacies based on the island of Réunion and metropolitan pharmacies. Results show that profitability rates reach similar levels, although pharmacies located on the island of Réunion tend to have higher gross margin rates. These higher rates are however rebalanced by certain over-costs or by overstocking.
