État des lieux de la santé des guides de haute montagne en France : santé perçue, morbidité déclarée, et recours aux soins

Abstract : Mountain guides use their bodies as their principal work tool. Objective: To provide data on mountain guide’s health in France and their health care needs. Methods: This was an epidemiological study, based on a descriptive cross-sectional survey. Self-administered anonymous questionnaires were distributed to all of the registered guides of the national guides union (Syndicat National des Guides de Haute Montagne), from 08 December 2016 to 13 February 2017. Results: 16% made valid returns (265/1656). 86,6% of the guides reported good or very good health, even if 44,1% reported professional activities restrictions for at least six months. Each guide reported at least one morbidity: first, osteo-articular problems (89,8% of the guides). Secondly, ophthalmologic problems (41,9%), then dermatologic problems (38,5%), oto-rhino-laryngological problems (38,5%), oral diseases (35,8%), and psychological problems (32,5%). Other morbidities were of a low frequency. 77,6% of the guides saw their referring practitioner at least once a year. The medical certificate stating non-contraindication to guide’s activity was done by the referring practitioner for 70,6% of them. 41,3% reported occasional self-medication. Lastly, 72,2% of the guides thought that the guide’s activity was a risk for their health. Conclusion: This survey provides a state of mountain guide’s health and shows the health care needs of these people. Screening and prevention of osteo-articular, dermatologic, ophthalmologic, and psychological problems should be reinforced.
