Représentations et expériences des pères à propos de l’allaitement maternel

Abstract : The prevalence of breastfeeding in France remains among the lowest in Europe, despite recommendations for exclusive breastfeeding for up to six months. The fathers have a very influential role in women's decision-making to breastfeed, as well as the duration of breastfeeding. A qualitative study was done which aims to make the representations and experiences of fathers about breastfeeding to identify potential barriers to breastfeeding initiation and its continuation. We observed that the role taken by the father during the breastfeed period was important for its pursuit, however, the necessary involvement of the mother and the strong bond between the child and the mother are factors that could cause fathers to want to accelerate child weaning. It is necessary to improve breastfeeding information and recognize the role of fathers in the success of breastfeeding.
