Good muscle tone is a major tenant of psychomotricity. Besides providing for basic movement and locomotion, it is also the principal vector of emotion and no-verbal communication. But what happens when the system doesn’t work as planned ? Children and adolescents with behavioral and developmental difficulties often display a muscular hypertonicity that I refer to as muscle-tone shield. So, in the absence of neurological or physiological damage, what is the purpose of such muscular rigidity, and how can it be treated with psychomotricity therapy ? Throughout this memoir I will use a theoretic clinical approach to this question.
