Étude descriptive des patients perdus de vue après chirurgie bariatrique au Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Bordeaux et de leur devenir

Abstract : Background: many patients are lost to follow-up after Bariatric surgery. Long-term follow-up care remains a key challenge for obtaining good results. This retrospective study aims to identify patients lost to follow-up and to determine their future in order to improve care. Methods: we have included patients who underwent bariatric surgery and received follow-up from the obesity service of the Bordeaux University Hospital Center from January 2005 to December 2014. 193 patients were eligible. Telephone interviews with General Practitioners (GPs) and patients lost to follow-up were carried out. Results: the ‘lost to follow-up’ rate is at 27.46%. It tends to grow as the years go by. Age, type of surgery, having previously benefited from surgery or being unemployed seem to have an impact on the follow-up. Three quarters of patients lost to follow-up are monitored only by their GP. Half of these GPs feel capable of ensuring the follow-up alone. 38% of patients lost to follow-up actively wish to resume follow-up. Conclusion: youth, precariousness and having already benefited from an operation demands heightened vigilance in the follow-up of a patient. The follow-up by the GP seems to be loaded with difficulties. Patients lost to follow-up wish to have care. For better results, it is vital to improve access to care and coordination between the GP and the specialist.
