Médecins, comment vous soignez-vous ?

Abstract : Context: for several years, interest in the health of doctors has grown. The emergence of the phenomenon of burnout and its media coverage have allowed an awareness of health professionals. Health care access for caregivers and in particular for practicing physicians is not structured. The objective of this study was to understand the processes used by doctors dealing with their health. Method: qualitative study with an inductive approach based on the principle of grounded theory. The population chosen was the active Reunion Island private practitionners. The collection of data took the form of inclusive face to face interviews of a comprehensive type Result: sick doctors are not patient like others. Their ability to self-diagnose and self-prescribe reinforced by this feeling of omnipotence generates an ambivalence in their health concerns. Doctors recognized that they should not care for themselves and yet managed their own health. Caring for their family could be just as complex. Doctors were in a position of ambivalence between their position of caregivers and patients. Discussion: the result found is consistent with the data of the literature. Other studies have shown that the concept of sick doctors was a delicate matter to be addressed by doctors themselves, with the same feelings of denial and omnipotence. The brakes mentioned by doctors for healing were many. Conclusion: private practitionners express a need for care but remain undecided and ambivalent about how to manage their health. A medical service specifically dedicated to caregivers, medical and paramedical professions, would provide a neutral and objective look. It would be interesting to carry out a feasibility and acceptability report of a medical service dedicated to caregivers.
