L’anglais au service de l’apprentissage du français pour les élèves en difficulté

Abstract : Even-though the French State dreams of opening its schools to multilingualism and diversity, English is still studied by a majority of students, but at a low level. The analysis of various processes, the construction of knowledge and motivation throughout explicit teaching and the fight against Academic difficulty will lead to the experiment in a CE1-class with ten pupils in difficulty. Reading is not only the action of sight-reading; it is much more than that. Starting from this observation, we will analyse how understanding a text in English may help students with difficulties in reading in French by acquiring skills which will help the construction of meaning. I used the following storybooks : Les petits bonshommes sur le carreau by Olivier Douzou and Little Beauty by Anthony Brown. The aim was to use English lessons to contribute to a better comprehension in French, by developing a common strategy in both languages. For various reasons, it was difficult to validate the hypothesis. The students gave good answers for the English book; they showed motivation and interest for the activity. Nevertheless, it was clear that the evolution between the French pre-test and post-test was very little. In any case, this experiment was full of positive elements for my professional experience.
