Approche participative pour la modélisation qualitative de socio-écosystèmes conchylicoles dans le Golfe Normand-Breton

Abstract : Shellfish farming takes place in an environment where human activities and nature are in interaction: we refer to socio-ecosystems. The REMAIC project, in which this study is included, uses a methodology that aims to identify the stakes and possible triggers for a sustainable shellfish farming activity in the Normano-Breton Gulf. Data used in this work are cognitive maps representing the socio-ecosystem, and recordings of discussions. They were collected during participatory workshops which gathered different stakeholders (shellfish farmers, institutions, environmental associations and other users of the coastal zone). They were analysed in order to (i) extract a common representation, (ii) study the socio-ecosystem stability, and (iii) examine potential responses to perturbations in the state of some variables, involving potential triggers. Mathematical methods of qualitative modeling were used. The main stakes identified are the organic waste on the foreshore, water quality, spatial extent, and social license linked to other uses of the coastal zone. Three theoretical scenarios were tested: a decrease in waste, an increase in spatial extent, and both combined. Results enable to qualitatively predict the impacts of these scenarios on the different components of the socio-ecosystem. This study highlights a need to reinforce the conciliation in governance processes, and an interest in the use of this method as a support tool for social dialogue.
