Comment les Réunionnaises construisent et déconstruisent leur mobilisation face au dépistage du cancer du col de l’utérus ?

Abstract : Background: in France, cervical cancer screening (CCS) is based on a simple test: cervical smear. Several factors explain the resistance of some women who chose not to take part in this screening. The aim of this work was to explore the construction and deconstruction of mobilisation or demobilisation of women living in Reunion island and dealing with the CCS. Method: qualitative survey through individual, face-to-face, in-depth interviews conducted with women inhabiting Reunion island. The data has been analysed using the grounded theory. Results: eleven women were interviewed between January and September 2017. Their behaviour evolved over time and matched their lifestyle, according to many representations. Fear of sickness, a personal component and the doctor’s attitude contributed to both mobilisation and demobilisation. Women’s behavior was negatively impacted by a reductive, uncertain, ambiguous and depreciated relationship with their own body… as well as the existence of a sexual taboo and overall ignorance. Conversely, the perception of a « thoughgful » prevention, the valorisation of the gynaecologic sphere and the personal resilience capacity were mobilising. Changing behaviours were associated with a critical vision of the participant’s family heritage, life events and shared experiences. Conclusion: the results of this study highlighted the singularity of each situation. Consulting women about their representations and their personal and family past could allow to guide them through a better understanding of their own behaviour and decision-making to decide whether to participate in the CCS, or not.
