Représentations du diabète de type 2 chez les Réunionnais migrants d’Inde en 2016-2017 : étude qualitative réalisée auprès de 9 migrants diabétiques de type 2

Abstract : Diabetes is a disease which has a high prevalence and severe morbidity and mortality in Reunion Island. The economic cost linked to the management of the disease and its complications is very high. There is a predisposition of the Indian population for type 2 diabetes (insulino-resistance, increased abdominal adiposity in spite of a low body mass index). In the United States and in the United Kingdom, South Asian migrants have respectively 7 and 4 times more risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to the general population. We focused on the representations of diabetes in this population at risk. 9 Indian migrants with diabetes settled in Reunion Island were interviewed between January and May 2016 through a qualitative study using semi-directive interviews. Main results showed that patients have abandoned traditional medicine for the benefit of western medicine, language differences are not an obstacle, the monitoring of diabetes, its complications and its chronicity are well understood. Patients incriminate heredity, stress, age in the genesis of diabetes. All of them expect a lot from their family doctor particularly in giving informations and awareness-raising which are lacking in India. On the other hand physical inactivity is important and the role of sport in the balance of diabetes is little known. This is also shown in Anglo-Saxon studies. It emerges from this study that general practitioners should insist more on the importance of sports in therapeutic education. Needs for this population are similar to the general population.
