Les effets de la discussion à visée philosophique sur le développement de l’empathie des élèves de cycles 2 et 3

Abstract : The new elementary school curricula recommend the practice of philosophically oriented discussion (POD) in the context of moral and civic education. The implementation of this particular form of debate, which puts a central place to pupil questioning, is accompanied by many contributions, whether linguistic, cognitive or social. In the same way, the decentration which the pupil must exercise in the POD to perceive and understand the thoughts and emotions of his classmates seems to contribute to the development of his empathic abilities. In doing so, the present study tends to highlight the effects of POD on the development of empathy in Cycle 2 and 3 pupils. To achieve this, I measured the empathy of a class of 25 CE2-CM1 pupils before and after 5 weeks of POD practice, using the Bryant Empathy Scale for Children and Adolescents. The observation of the results does not show a significant evolution of the scores of empathy of the pupils. Nevertheless, it highlights a clear empathic superiority of girls over boys, thus corroborating the findings already made by many previous studies. In addition, the results show a more pronounced evolution of the empathy scores of students with low empathic abilities compared to those with an already high empathy score. Although this study has many limitations that make it impossible to judge the real effects of POD practice on the empathy of Cycle 2 and 3 pupils, its exploratory nature opens the way for future research that could investigate the effects of POD on pupils with low empathic abilities.
