Besoins et attentes des personnes âgées diabétiques concernant un assistant personnel intelligent en vue d’améliorer leur autonomie et leur qualité de vie en milieu rural

Abstract : CONTEXT. Healthcare access in rural areas is difficult for elderly people with chronic pathologies that affect their dependency especially when they are suffering from diabetes. As part of the EIT Health (European institute of innovation and technology in health) call for projects we are considering an Intelligent Personal Assistant (IPA) to these patients to preserve their autonomy and improve their quality of life. OBJECTIVE. The main objective of this first study is to collect the needs and the expectations of elderly diabetic rural patients in order to define the most relevant functionalities of the dedicated IPA. METHOD. According to the COREQ criteria a qualitative study using semi-directed interviews was conducted with type 2 diabetic patients aged over 65 years in Isère and Savoie until data saturation. After a complete transcription of the interviews, the collected data were analyzed with a researcher triangulation. RESULTS. 21 patients, 12 men and 9 women, aged from 66 to 92, were included from September 2017 to March 2018. The needs and the expectations of the patients were: the help with the hygiene and the dietary measures, the daily practical management of their pathology, the delivery of information on the diabetes and the social needs (e.g. interaction between patients and with the medical staff). CONCLUSION. Three functions have been selected for the starting IPA: the help with the respect of the hygienic-dietary rules, the provision of information concerning diabetic pathology and a reminder of medical and paramedical appointments. To build the complete device the other stakeholders would be solicited.
