Typologie des personnages de médecins généralistes dans le roman français au XXème siècle

Abstract : General Medicine acquired the title of medical specialty in 2004 in France. The discipline was built during the XXth century “by default”, as a non-speciality. Social representations around the profession of general practitioner (GP) help to construct GP group’s professional identity. Previous studies have focused on GP representation in literature, cinema, drawing, etc. The purpose of this study was to bring out the different types of GP characters in twentieth century French novels. A qualitative study was carried out from extracts taken from fictional French novels featuring at least one GP, published between 1900 and 1999 and whose action was taking place in France in the twentieth century. The most systematic collection of novels as possible was carried out. First, the extracts were analyzed by two researchers using a fixed set of perspectives, inductively constituted. Then, a triangulation of the data permitted to obtain a summary sheet for each character of GP. Finally, sheets have been divided into homogeneous and distinctive categories constituting the different types, following Grémy and le Moan’s method. 42 novels were included and 33 GP characters were identified. None was a woman. Five types were formed, named and described: "young go-getters", "good Samaritans", "travelers in search", "idolaters of status", "devastated and bitter". This study suggests that GP representation in 20th century French novels is a composite figure appearing alternately as a pillar of society, a symbol of hope, a figure of domination, a marginal observer or a consumed by the society.
