Alcool et plongée : attitude et consommation des plongeurs scaphandres autonomes français en plongée loisir, une étude sur 4302 plongeurs

Abstract : Introduction: scuba diving is a recreational sport which requires reasoning and decision-making skills. The main objective of the study is to evaluate the alcohol consumption and the attitudes of French divers in recreational diving. Methods: in this cross-sectional observational study, surveys have been collected by electronic questionnaire from March to June 2016. A total of 1 500 diving clubs have been targeted. All French divers with a FFESSM or PADI certification were eligible. Results: 4 302 divers were included. The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) was used to estimate at risk drinking and alcohol dependence respectively in 26.4 % and 8,1 % of French divers. Divers with a risk of alcohol dependence are men (OR: 1,7 [1,3-2,2]), aged between 15 and 25 years old (OR: 2,4 [1,4-3,9]) with an open water certification (OR: 2,8 [1,9- 4,3]) residing in DOM/TOM (OR: 2,4 [1,8-3]). Divers are more likely to drink alcohol and are more likely to be involved in occasional heavy point drinking than the general French population. In our study, 19.8 % of the scuba divers had dived with a drunk dive buddy and 30 % admitted to drinking alcohol within 6 hours before diving. Among them, 8.8 % thought that this consumption had affected their dive. Conclusion: the consumption of alcohol has repercussions on scuba diving activity. Therefore, this issue requires more information on the risks to which the divers expose themselves. The general practitioner is a main actor in primary care prevention screening in this at-risk population.
