Vivre une expérience de scoutisme en Seine-Saint-Denis (93) : une « parenthèse » porteuse d’enjeux éducatifs ?

Abstract : The aim of this research is to understand how the experience lived in Scouts et Guides de France (SGDF) would constitute a “parenthesis” in the life of young person living in Seine-Saint-Denis (93), which would allow an evolution of the initially incorporated ways of doing and thinking. The analysis is conducted on 4 aspects: conditions of the parenthesis, learning allowed in this context, their potential sustainability beyond the parenthesis, and the young person reasons of commitment despite a primary socialization weakly linked to Scouting. In order to set up a vision of Scouting in popular neighbourhood in this territory, this study has been lead with 3 groups: Saint-Denis, Aulnay-sous-Bois et Notre-Dame-des-Ailes. Comprehensive interviews were conducted with 15 youngsters, 2 youth leaders, 3 group leaders. Two weekends and one meeting have been accompanied in participant observation, in order to collect data in an ethnographic notebook. Qualitative analysis focused on the interview grid’s themes. Nature, atmosphere in the group of friends, and Scouting’s pedagogical approach (education through action and adult support) are the aside’s conditions. Thanks to these prerequisite, scouting becomes a suitable socializing framework for new learning, in terms of skills, attitudes, and self-construction. Although it remains "child-dependent", the evolution of these dispositions can be transferred to other contexts, reflecting an effective secondary socialization. Youth commit themselves because the experience lived by Scouts is both a partial break and a complement to their daily lives: Scouting presents a framework that is secure while opening the field of possibilities, which seems to fill a need of young people surveyed. Without falling into a homogenizing vision of Scouting in the 93, these results suggest that it represents a separate socializing framework and an educational space, where a redefinition in terms of ways of doing and thinking is possible. The "Scout aside" is porous because, by influencing personalities and attitudes beyond this particular situation, the lived experience contributes to a kind of secondary socialization.
