Quelles sont les représentations des patients vis-à-vis des gestes techniques pratiqués par les médecins généralistes en cabinet ?

Abstract : Introduction: Procedural skills are part of the main general practitioner's practices. The literature has pointed out a lack of request from patients to their practitioner. Objective: The aim of this dissertation was to gain a better understanding on the origin of this lack of request, by directly investigating the representation of patients with respect to the procedural skills in office practice. Method: We applied a focus group methodology. Participants (up to 18 and non-medical experts) have been divided into four focus groups from April to June 2017. Results: Participants did not know the definition of procedural skills and were generally blind in knowing what the general practitioner could and could not do. Participants argued that the general practitioner redirected at a very early stage toward a specialist physician rather than proposing a procedural skill. Interestingly, while participants were aware about the difficulties that practitioners faced with, they proposed solutions in line with improved communication and education, or interventions through social security. Participants also thought that procedural skills are more practiced in rural area compared to urban area, thereby hypothesizing that practice might be reduced with the new practitioners' generation. While mentioning the general lack of practitioners, participants would, appreciate an increase in the use of procedural skills and, those who have already benefited were fully satisfied. Conclusion: The finding showed that issues related to procedural skills demand fall within a major lack of patients' information, education, as well as habits to address the specialist directly.
