, L'étiologie du taurodontisme n'est pas encore totalement élucidée. Aujourd'hui, l'hypothèse la plus courante est que, après la formation de la couronne de la dent, le diaphragme de la gaine épithéliale de Hertwig ne s'invaginerait pas au bon moment et pas assez horizontalement. Ce processus de développement de racine peut s'arrêter à différent niveaux ce qui donnerait les types hypo-, méso-et hypertaurodontes. Plusieurs auteurs ont établis des classifications pour tenter de qualifier le taurodontisme
