Encadrement des étudiants sages-femmes en salles de naissances dans les situations d’interruptions médicales de grossesses et de morts fœtales in utero

Abstract : Objective : Midwives, present in the birth room, have a key role in supporting couples in cases of intrauterine foetal death (IFD) or therapeutic abortion (TA). They also play a vital role in teaching the skills, know-how and skills of trainees at their side. Although medical training is part of their professional mission, the supervision of students in these situations of support for perinatal mourning is not imposed by midwife schools. The objective of our study is to better understand the motivations and difficulties of midwives in the supervision of students in these situations in the birth place. Methods : We first conducted a survey of 114 student midwives to have a preliminary review. Then, we conducted a qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews with 20 qualified (level 3) midwives. Results and conclusion : The study revealed that, despite the students’aspirations, their number of participations in these situations remains relatively low. Moreover, all midwives consider student supervision as one of their professional missions, but only a little more than half supervise them in these situations. Motivation however, is shared equally by students and midwives to participate in these situations, as are their feelings about initial training in this area.
