Appréciation et compréhension de l’humour non verbal chez les traumatisés crâniens

Abstract : People with traumatic brain injury (TBI) sometimes have a disturbance of humor comprehension. Lots of studies treated of verbal humor, but non verbal humor is still less explored. Some TBI people suffer from difficulties to recognize emotional facial expressions that are an important part of non verbal humor. We tried to study how people with TBI have difficulty appreciating and understanding non verbal humor and recognizing emotional facial expressions too. Furthemore, we wanted to observe if there was a link between emotional facial expressions recognition and non verbal humor comprehension. Thus, we developed a protocol composed of non verbal humorous videos that has been validated by control subjects, then presented to TBI subjects and to control subjects. The different tasks were : to rate the video, explain why it’s humorous and choose among many proposals the one that explains the humorous element, then appoint the character’s emotional facial expressions. TBI subjetcs present significant difficulties in appreciating and understanding humor. These results can be explained by affective, cognitive, and behavioral aftermath of TBI people. Emotional facial expressions do not show any significant difference. We find no more link between this skill and non verbal humor comprehension. It could be interesting to study emotional facial expressions recognition in an other way. Our results highlight the interest of an evaluation and a training in ecological situations and adapted to each patient within the speech therapy.
