, L'hystérie de la mère planta dans leur esprit un doute qui prit de l'ampleur et finit par dicter l'issue de leur mariage. Mary n'arrive pas à s'en remettre et rejette la faute sur sa mère en répétant à plusieurs reprises : « It was a wicked woman's curse 110 ». Ces différents exemples montrent que la sorcière est représentée par des personnages hystériques dont l'esprit est perturbé, mais ils montrent aussi qu'elle est racine de démence car, grâce à ses sortilèges, elle empoisonne l'esprit de ceux qu'elle ensorcelle. Comme on peut le voir dans La Belle Dame Sans Merci, la sorcière sème le doute dans l'esprit des hommes, telle une graine qui grandit pour devenir un fruit, ce doute s'accroit et devient démence. Dans le poème, après avoir été envoûté, le chevalier avoue que depuis sa rencontre avec la belle dame il n'a plus jamais rêvé (« The latest dream I ever dream'd 111 »). Les hommes qu'il aperçoit hurlent le nom de cette femme (« La Belle Dame sans Merci, Thee hath in thrall! 112 ») ce qui prouve que la sorcière les a asservis, Mary devient alors l'égale de sa mère hystérique et comme si le sort avait fonctionné, Edward se retrouve symboliquement marié à la mère : « Oh Christ! you're like your mother! 109
