Quelles sont les difficultés rencontrées par les médecins généralistes à inclure des patients dans l’étude GET UP, étude évaluant 6 stratégies pour aborder l’éjaculation prématurée en médecine générale ? Étude qualitative par entretiens semi-dirigés

Abstract : Background : premature ejaculation affects 5 to 30% of men. According to the patients, the family physician is the appropriate professional to discuss this issue. However, few patients received the med-ical help needed. A prior study had identified 6 communication skills to tackle the topic of prem-ature ejaculation in primary care. The aim of the study GetUP was to test the efficacity of these communication skills in primary care. However, after two years of inclusion and several recov-ery strategies to motivate the investigators, the study suffered from a low inclusion of patients. Objective : the aim of this study was to identify GPs’ difficulties to include patients in the study GetUP. Methods : thematic analysis of semi structured interviews with 11 French GPs who had participated to the study GetUP. Results : theoretical saturation was achieved. Primary care research was considered too far from clinical practice. The complicity with the trainee in charge with the study was one of the most important motivation to participate. Lack of time and administrative burden were the two main constraints. The originality of the theme of GetUP study seduced some investigators. However, physician involvement in sexual health was difficult and slowed down the doctors to include. Recovery strategies and personalized links between the investigators and researchers were important elements. Improved questionnaire formats or reduced questionnaire length and the implication of the medicine students were proposed. They insisted on a better communication with researchers. A proactive attitude was suggested to help patients to tackle their sexual problems thanks to posters on the sexual dysfunctions in the waiting room. Conclusion : the need for good communications from the researchers and initiate medicine students in research would promote research in primary care. Both physicians and students need training in communication skills for sexual history taking and the management of sexual problems.
