Évaluation des risques sanitaires liés aux hydrocarbures aromatiques polycycliques lors de travaux d’étanchéité de bâtiments

Abstract : Introduction: Roofers are exposed to PAHs as they apply new roofing membranes (bitumens) and plane older roofing membranes (coal tars). The purpose of this paper was to assess the current PAH exposure rates roofers face, as well as to compare them to data collected over a 15-year period of time. Materials and methods: Metrologies included individual air samplings and/or a biological monitoring. 73 roofers were divided into 3 groups: bitumen sheet flame welding, bitumen sheet pasting with a hot bitumen binder and planing of older coal-tar pitch roofing membranes. Results: Gaseous PAHs were heavily predominant over particulate PAHs. The most significant concentration rates were observed in the group that planes older coal-tar pitch roofing membranes. 2-3 aromatic cycles PAH metabolites were predominant over the 4-6-cycle. The roofers’ concentration rates were significantly higher than those of control group. The 1-OHP, 3-fluorenol and 2-phenanthrol were the biomarkers best correlated with exposure. The 3-OHBaP rates were frequently undetectable for bitumen exposure. Conclusion: The current PAH exposure are low when applying bituminous roofing membranes, but can be higher when workers plane older roofing membranes that contain coal tar-derived substances. The most relevant exposure biomarkers in this instance are 1-OHP, fluorenols and phenanthrols. BaP metabolites are only advised in the case of exposure to coal tar-derived substances.
