Connaissances, perceptions et implication des hommes en contraception : étude qualitative menée auprès de 12 hommes dans les Bouches-du-Rhône

Abstract : Introduction: Birth control often boils down to female contraception. However, besides condoms, men are now offered other contraception options. Despite the various contraceptive methods available, abortion rates have not decreased significantly. Men have an obvious role to play in this area. This paper aims to answer the following research question: what are men's knowledge and perceptions about male and female contraception, and how involved are they in the issue of contraception in their love lives? Objectives: The main objectives are: to assess men's knowledge and perceptions of male and female contraception and to assess the level of men's involvement in the couple's contraception. Methods: This is a qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews lasting about 10 to 20 minutes with 12 male volunteers, all residing in the Bouches du Rhônes département. The interviews followed previously tested guidelines. They were fully transcribed, analysed and classified into five sections. Results: The main findings show limited but consistent knowledge of contraception as well as a few misunderstandings. The satisfaction of the information is globally present. Feelings towards contraception are both positive and negative. Representations associated with contraception show some persistent stereotypes and prejudices. Male involvement chiefly occurs through dialogue. Men’s main expectations are a decrease in side effects and constraints, better practicality and additional information. Conclusion: Contraception must be perceived as a couple rather than a feminine issue. Sex education sessions have a major role to play in this evolution. Healthcare professionals must be trained and able to prescribe all available options.
