Utilisation de plaquettes de bois pour la litière des ovins viande : impact sur leur bien-être, les propriétés physiques de la litière, le travail de l’éleveur et coût de la pratique

Abstract : Livestock farms in Massif Central are not often self-sufficient in straw required for animal bedding. This makes farms dependant on market price fluctuations. Improved autonomy in straw is all the more necessary in a context of climate change. The valorisation of wood products from the farm in the form of woodchips for bedding would help to improve this autonomy while reopening the environment. As there is no technical or scientific reference in sheep breeding, the Climagrof project aims to set up experiments on five sites in Limousin and Auvergne to study the impact of the use of woodchip on 1) animal welfare, 2) physical properties of the bedding, 3) farmer work, 4) cost of the practice. The trials carried out on the site of “Le Mourier” on maintenance ewes and finishing lambs didn’t reveal any negative impacts of the use of woodchip on animal welfare and behaviour compared to straw. Woodchip bedding is cooler and drier than straw litter. Although the frequency of addition of woodchip is lower than of straw, the working time is more important. The economic cost may be higher than straw if we take into account all the charges for woodchip production but can be interesting if the breeding prunes his hedges himself and is the price of straw should increase. The study showed that it is possible to replace straw with wood for bedding.
