Intoxications accidentelles domestiques chez les enfants de moins de 10 ans : particularités épidémiologiques en Guyane Française

Abstract : Background: Amongst young children, acute poisoning is most often accidental because of the ingestion of products left in their reach. Its current characteristics are not known in French Guiana. Methods: We carried out a retrospective epidemiological study of pediatric cases of ingestion of toxic products that resulted in a consultation in the emergency services of the 3 hospitals and 17 Delocalized Prevention and Care Centers (DPCC) in French Guiana or that were signaled by a call to poison control centers, between January 2013 and December 2015. Results: During this period, 662 cases amongst children under 10 years old were identified throughout the entire territory. The average age was 2.48 years (+/-1.61). Most of these were monointoxications (n=617, 97.47%, p=0.002), more frequently related to a lack of risk perception (n=337, 89.39%, p<0.001). Three categories of ingested products (household, chemical and pharmaceutical) were mainly involved whatever the age (n=542, 81.58%, p<0.001). Amongst the 457 medical consultations, 335 (73.31%) were sent home, 88 (19.26%) were hospitalized. Chemicals represented the largest category amongst all the hospitalizations (n=26, 29.55%, p<0.001). In DPCC, more than half (n=17, 65.38%) of the children examined had ingested petrol or rat poison. Conclusion: Acute poisoning was frequent and most often related to risk behaviors. Amongst the cases examined, certain products were banned in France such as paraquat, malathion, and cannabis. This has emphasized the need to increase prevention and to develop strategies adapted to the Guyanese context.
