Phénotypage haut-débit du comportement alimentaire du porc en croissance : impact des outils de mesures sur la mesure des caractères et relations avec les caractères de croissance

Abstract : In pork production, reduction of feed cost and nitrogen emissions are two major issues. One solution is to improve the feed efficiency (FE). One option is to select some feeding behaviours (FB) traits. Feeding behaviour data from 2,181 growing entire male Pietrain pigs bred in groups with ad libitum acess to feed were collected. They were bred in two farms equipped with different single place electronic feeders (SPEF): "Ivog" and "Schauer". The FB was compared according to the type of SPEF. Genetic parameters of nine FB criteria and the main production traits were estimated using generalized mixed linear models. Two types of behaviour were distinguished according to the farm: in the farm equipped with SPEF Ivog, the pigs made "substantial" meals in terms of quantity consumed and duration. Pig meals with Schauer SPEFs were smaller in terms of quantity and duration. They had more meals every day than pigs reared with the SPEF Ivog. The FB variables had high heritabilities, ranging from 0.44 to 0.59. These heritabilities were higher than that of the feed conversion ratio, the main criterion used for the improving FE today. Animals with few visits to the SPEF but "large" meals had better production performances. According to this study, it would be possible to account for FB in current selection criteria. Nevertheless, the limits of such selection remain to be studied.
