L’autosurveillance mammaire : quelle pratique chez les femmes ? Étude observationnelle menée auprès de 351 femmes âgées de 25 ans et plus sans antécédent sénologique

Abstract : Introduction : Through its status of plague of public health, breast cancer comes under both primary and secondary prevention. It’s in this context that breast awareness seems particularly interesting. Objectives of this work were to study the prevalence of this practice, modes of breast awareness to practice according to them, as well as obstacles and motivations for its realization. Method : Observational study achieved in a maternity hospital of level I and self-employed midwives’ offices through questionnaires intended for women aged 25 years old and over without medical history of breast cancer. Results : Among the 355 questionnaires analysed, 60.3% of women use breast awareness, mainly once a month (23.9%). Sources of information and motivations appeared varied. However, the main obstacle remained the lack of information (45.4%). The low rate of knowledge about breast cancer was also found. Discussion : Some factors seem to influence the breast awareness’ practice such as the presence of mastalgia, having benefited from a clinical breast examination by a professional, received information about breast cancer, obtained a better score of knowledge about this subject and received information about breast awareness by her general practitioner. The important thing seems to be to give the information at the right time. Conclusion : A universal definition of breast awareness along with larger studies seem necessary. Womens’ information by professionals remains an unmissable prerequisite.
