Le « sujet migrant » : négociations d'une identité collective : étude de cas d'un refuge à la frontière du Mexique et le Guatemala

Abstract : In a global context of border control, social movements defending migrants have succeeded in creating a collective identity of the “migrant” as subject holder of human rights but also as vulnerable because of the violation of these rights. Throughout this research I employ the term “migrant subject” to refer to this collective identity. The fieldwork supporting this research was done at the shelter La "72 :Hogar-Refugio para personas migrantes" located in the border between Mexico and Guatemala. This shelter receives migrants and asylum seekers from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. Despite employing a discourse of migrants and refugees as subjects of human rights, the image of the vulnerable migrant prevails. This is translated in a collective management of migrants, characterized by strong tensions inside the shelter. I explore the strategies and negotiations employed by migrants to defy the spatial and temporal control enforced by the shelter’s staff. I also analyze the migrants’ strategies to separate the “good” from the “bad” migrants. This differentiation helps them better manage the stigmatization from the local population. I’m also interested in the lag between the image of the migrant as a holder of rights and their lack of interest in participating in political actions. Finally, I believe that as a result of these identity negotiations, their strategies in the infra-political level and the construction of their own narratives, these migrants succeed at defining themselves as autonomous subjects.
