Recours aux médecins des coureurs de trail de moyenne distance durant la période de préparation : enquête auprès des coureurs de l’Euskal‐Trail 2017 (2 x40km - 4400 dénivelé positif) 26 et 27 mai 2017

Abstract : Introduction: trail running is sharply developing today. The number of runners and races keeps increasing, and the runners are getting more and more demanding. The goal of our study was to find out if mid‐distance trail‐runners consult their physician/doctor in the course of their preparation and to what purpose – apart from consultation for a medical certificate stating no contraindication – so as to be able to answer their needs. One of the secondary aims was to assess the practice of ECG while issuing a medical certificate stating no contraindication. Methodology: descriptive, quantitative and monocentric study. The data have been collected from anonymous paper questionnaires filled by trail‐runners participating in the 2017 Euskal‐Trail in the Basque Country. Outcomes: we obtained a response rate of 99.3%. 27% of runners consulted a doctor in the course of their preparation and among them, 57% did so because of an injury. The medical certificate stating no contraindication is issued by the attending physician in 80% of cases. 41% of runners received neither resting nor exercise ECGs over the last five years. Discussion: 15% of runners hurt themselves before the day of the race, which is quite significant. The attending physician is central in care coordination. There is simple prevention advice and there are simple things to know about the most frequent pathologies in order to answer the specific needs of these trail‐runners. Although it is recommended as good negative predictive value, the ECG is under‐practiced in issuing a medical certificate stating no contraindication.
