Mise en place de l’étude visant à caractériser des capacités cognitives élaborées chez la truite arc-en-ciel (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Abstract : In the context of farm animal welfare emotions and cognitive capacities are now taken into account. The present study aimed at measuring complex cognitive capacities of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Triploid rainbow trout were placed in enriched environment from fry stages. (1) In this environment, their behavior was observed by "scans sampling". The results show that fish spent more time near the plastic plants and near the PVC pipe, than near the rocks. (2) A spatial learning test in a T-maze was realized in order to select the most performing trout for the continuation of the project and also to measure the effect of the food reward appetence on learning speed. The learning was fast (latency to obtain the reward : 2 minutes on average), possibly due to the early environmental enrichment. This latency was even shorter with the appetitive reward. (3) Fifteen selected fish were then trained in isolation to a paradigm of operant conditioning with self-feeders. We showed that isolated rainbow trout are capable of activating the self-feeder to obtain a food reward. This apparatus seems to be adapted perform future tests of « matching-to-sample » in order to measure the capacities of discrimination, categorization and working memory of this species.
