La rencontre entre Orient et Occident : voyage à travers les représentations véhiculées par l'opéra

Abstract : This is the representation of a meeting between Orient and the Occident which takes place into the studied operas. It’s also the discovery of a new world, an attractive exoticism alterity. The creation of the representation allow to understand which domination is going on through the opera, and this domination expresses itself through many different representations who questioned the place of power, religion, men in comparison to women, and especially the Orient in comparison to Occident. Who benefit from that? The Orient became very quickly the victim of all those representations who stigmatised and made the Orient peoples exaggerated and stereotyped. In this way, we understand that the orientalism acts, in most of the time, as Edward Saïd said in his book, The Orientalism. Finally, if we found all those components in the operas, it’s because they were write in their own epoch in which the Occident was turned toward a part of the Orient to discover this world as the opposite of their own.
