Connaissances, attitudes et pratiques en matière de santé affective et sexuelle chez les adolescents scolarisés en classe de Seconde aux Antilles françaises : protocole et premiers résultats

Abstract : Background: Caribbean teenagers are at high-risk of sexuality-related conditions: sexual transmitted diseases, abortion, early pregnancy, violence. Aim: To evaluate knowledge, attitudes and practice in sexual health among adolescents in the French Caribbean. Methods: CAPSEX-AF is a cross-sectional study conducted in 2017 and 2018 using cluster sampling of a population of teenagers enrolled in 10th grade in general and vocational schools of Guadeloupe and Martinique. Data was collected through a web-based self-administered questionnaire. An active consent of both parents was required. Results: 2247 teenagers in 118 classrooms of 52 schools were included (participation rate: 73,5%). The non-response rate was less than 5% for most questions. Outliers were rare. Observations were similar in Martinique and Guadeloupe. Prevention knowledge was poor, and a gap existed between knowledge and practice. Attitudes towards homosexuality were commonly negative, attitudes towards early pregnancy were often positive, and history of pregnancy was frequent, especially in vocational schools. Filmed sexual encounters were widely distributed. History of violence was frequent, especially in girls and in vocational schools. Conclusion: Acceptability of the study among adolescents, their parents and the education professionals, is assessed by the participation rate. Collected data appears of good quality. CAPSEX-AF displays the trends of the sexual risks that teenagers face in the French West Indies and provides insights to implementing better school-based intervention programs.
