Mutilations sexuelles féminines : vécu et attentes des femmes excisées sur leur prise en charge médicale à Grenoble

Abstract : Context: In 2004, approximately 53000 women living in France had undergone female genital mutilation (FGM). Despite research affirming the lack of medical knowledge by practitioners, few studies have explored the perspectives of these women. Objective: Analyse the experiences and expectations of circumcised women in health care. Method: Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, 8 semi-structured interviews were conducted between July 2017 and July 2018 in Grenoble with volunteering French speaking, circumcised women, over the age of 18. Transcripts of the recordings were subsequently analysed by 2 researchers, permitting an investigator triangulation. Results: Participants often suffered from their mutilation and felt it impaired their feminine identity, a feeling sometimes increased by different normative values in their host community. Due to the taboo on the matter, they sought an individualized way to express their experiences and desires. Often unsatisfied by previous encounters with health care professionals, they wished for greater compassion and respect, essential for the possibility of future care. Each woman took a unique approach toward a personal and multidimensional reconstruction of their identity. They did so by following a personalised timescale. Thus, they regained the power to choose, allowing them to re-appropriate their self-confidence. Conclusion: Although practitioners seem reluctant to discuss this sensitive matter, this study demonstrates the desire of these women to speak freely about FGM, if favourable conditions are applied. Their role is to guide and support them along a personalised path towards a multidimensional reconstruction.
