Connaissances des femmes enceintes sur le dépistage de la trisomie 21 : quid de l’information transmise par les professionnels de santé

Abstract : Objective – Assess pregnant women’s knowledge on first-trimester combined Down syndrome screening, at the time of their prenatal consultation. Materials and methods. – A questionnaire was submitted to the patients coming for their prenatal consultation in a University Hospital prenatal clinic between Mars 17 and April 10, 2018. Questions on Down syndrome screening and non-invasive prenatal testing were proposed to the mothers who were asked to rate them. Each patient was questioned on her exposition to Down syndrome screening, the category of medical she previously consulted, and the information she received. Patient’s knowledge was evaluated according to these criteria. Results – Two hundred patients were included in this study. The average correct answer rating was 8,0 (out of 10 questions) concerning first-trimester Down syndrome screening and 2,1 (out of 4 questions) concerning non-invasive prenatal testing. Concerning first-trimester Down syndrome screening, no difference was found between nationality, gestity, category of professional consulted before, gestational age or prior of pregnancy before 2009. Higher correct answer ratings were observed when the patient had more than 30 years old or a high level of study. Concerning non-invasive prenatal testing, no difference was found between age, nationality, level of study, gestity, category of professional consulted before or gestational age. Conclusion – These results show that patient’s knowledge of first-trimester Down syndrome screening is overall adequate and depends on their age and level of study. Patient’s knowledge of non-invasive prenatal testing is overall inadequate. It is deemed necessary to improve information especially to young women who are pregnant for the first time.
