Étude des déterminants environnementaux de la composition algale de la laisse de mer

Abstract : Given the current biodiversity crisis, it is necessary to enhance scientific knowledge, to implement monitoring of communities and to empower citizens. In order to do so, we studied the algal composition of beach wrack to identify drivers of this composition and to prepare the implementation of citizen data collection. We sampled beach wrack at 138 sites at large spatial scale and at 31 sites at reduced spatial scale with temporal monitoring from march to may for the latter. Statistical analysis of this data shows that the composition of beach wrack depends on close algal communities, although exogenous algal inputs probably exist as well, and that the beach goemorphology (substrate, coastline) or hydrodynamic factors (storm, tide) also influence beach wrack composition. Moreover, our results show a hight temporal variability in beach wrack composition. The formation of beach wrack certainly implies other drivers that we did not identify. This study shall be continued, in particular with the collection of more accurate data on algal communities and habitats. Eventually, the citizen data collection implemented by the Plages Vivantes programm will allow the production of big data, raise awareness among citizens to the challenges of marine biodiversity and establish citizen participation to scientific knowledge.
