Diabète de type 1 et scolarité en élémentaire et maternelle en Normandie

Abstract : Introduction. Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) is expanding in children. The primary schooling of a diabetic child requires the support of the educational team to carry out the actions registered in the project for individualized management at school (PIM). The main objective of this study was to evaluate a training video to improve the level of self-confidence of teachers in achieving glucagon in case of severe hypoglycemia. The second objective was to assess their knowledge about T1D. Material and methods. In this interventional study, we proposed a questionnaire to the whole of primary school teachers of Normandy, receiving a type 1 diabetic child during the 2017-2018 school year. Questions were asked about their level of self-confidence in performing T1D-related actions and about their theoretical knowledge. Then, we offered them to watch an original video and then we asked them to answer the questionnaire again. The confidence level was assessed on a scale of 1 to 4 (very confident). Their knowledge was evaluated using a score out of 20. Results. We included 221 teachers. The response rate to at least one questionnaire was 76.5%. The video significantly improved the level of self-confidence to inject glucagon in an emergency (p <0.001) by 0.36 points. It significantly improved their knowledge (p <0.001) by 1.5 points. Discussion. The video significantly improves teachers' confidence to inject glucagon in an emergency. This video could be useful in annual renewals of PIM.
