Le rôle de la diaspora dans le développement de l'activité touristique à Porto Rico

Abstract : The Puerto Rican diaspora is taking shape through a strong cultural demand. This identity expression is reflected by return trips between the home country and the host country, which stimulate the creation of transnational bonding. Tourism enter then in a socio-economic dynamic that makes us wonder about the role of the diasporic community in the Puerto Rican tourism activity development, which is one of the most important in the country. To this end, I based my research on a quantitative survey intended for the diasporic members and the tourism companies in Puerto Rico, as well as qualitative interviews intended for public actors having an impact in the tourism development. We have to admit that, the diasporic individual, when he is travelling within the diasporic space, is tempted to adopt touristic consumption habits while fitting into the local community, leading to valuable economical and territorial impacts. However, the strong sense of belonging highlighted in this study shows up a mismatch regarding to the low level of involvement of the diaspora as an investor, which can be explain by a recent understanding and a small contribution from the entrepreneurial sphere and the public authorities.
