Les stratégies de coping des internes en Médecine Générale : 1) Revue systématique de la littérature, 2) Etude Intern’life, promotion 2013-2016

Abstract : Medical residents face stressful situations unique to their status and use specific strategies to cope with this stress. Studies show high prevalence of psychological disorders in this population in which stress is a contributing factor. The aim of this study was to assess the extent to which coping strategies among residents change over time. A literature review of coping strategies among residents identified that confrontation with a patient's death and overwork were the most common stress factors and stressful situation among residents around the world. In selected articles, avoidance as a coping strategy was the most described. Majority of articles did not specify stressful situations. A prospective study evaluating coping strategies and their potential predictors was conducted among general practice residents of Aquitaine throughout their internship. Quantitative data analysis revealed that each of the three coping strategy categories studied, problem-based coping, emotion-based coping, and seeking support, remain stable between beginning, middle and end of internship. Qualitative data analysis revealed passive coping strategies were prevailing. Studies highlighting the stressful situations encountered would be useful to link them to the coping strategies used and identify the contexts of dysfunctional coping mechanisms to manage stress.
