État des connaissances des parents d’enfants asthmatiques sur la maladie asthmatique et sa prise en charge, dans le Sud de la Réunion entre 2016 et 2017

Abstract : Our study aims at describing how well the asthmatic children's parents know the disease (symptoms, triggers, pathophysiology) and to measure the parents’ willingness to participate in a program for therapeutical education. We made a cross-sectional quantitative and descriptive study in the South of the Reunion Island in 2017. The patients included were the parents of asthmatic children ranging from 4 to 15 years old, living in the South of Reunion Island who volunteered after a consultation at the General Practitioner’s. The main criteria was their answers to the self-reported assessment they were handed out or were sent Google Forms. 69 parents have been solicited, 60 had answered, 90% were women. The average age of children was 9 years old, 36,7% of them with a history of hospitalisation for asthma. The parental asthma amounted to 66,7%. In Reunion Island, parents are aware of allergologic testing but active smoking is high (41,7%). Although parents do know the effectiveness of a disease-modifying therapy they resort to it for a too short span of time. Indeed, only 50% acknowledge their children will take it for several months even though they don’t suffer an asthma attack. 45% of the parents think asthma is not chronic disease, which may partly explain why they don’t stick to a long-term disease-modifying therapy. Information about asthma was generally given by the General Practitioner (38,3%) and the allergist (13,3%). 71,7% of the parents having answered the survey were willing to participate in therapeutic education sessions. Parents seem to lake much in terms of knowledge on the asthmatic illness and wish they could attend education sessions. The General Practitioner has to get trained and get used to implementing an educational approach regarding asthma, and send their patient to the School for asthma if necessary.
