L'activité physique adaptée proposée aux personnes âgées de plus de 65 ans dans le cadre d’une maladie chronique : quel est le vécu du patient dans son engagement à la pratique ?

Abstract : Introduction: population ageing increases the incidence of chronic diseases and the amount of elderly peoplee with lack of autonomy. Health benefit of the physical activity is well known. Many physical activity programs specifically designed for elderly needs have been developed over the past 30 years. The knowledge held in such programs requierd to be exploring in order to increase support and participation. The main goal of study was to explore the experience and knowledge of the program for people over 65 years old with long-term illness (ALD) participating or having participated in an adapted physical activity program (APA). Method: qualitative survey through individual, face-to-face, in depth interviews conducted with people over 65 years old who are referred to an APA program as part of their ALD. The data has been analyzed using the grounded theory Results: ten elderly people from 65 to 85 years old have been asked. The reasons of the physical activity commitments were pluri-factorial and progressive during the program, this one be perceived as a facilitator. Personal coaching and teamwork among people who know each other increase personal commitment. Rallying or demotivation, influenced by the fear of decline and close entourage was different from one person to another. The pursuit of a durable physical activity after the end of experience was not consistent for each of them even though many solutions are available in order to do so. Conclusion: this study offers a better understanding of the individual and socio-environmental factor complexity, those ones being responsible for the development and the upholding of health-related behaviors. APA programs are perfectly suited to find out safe practice for seniors. However, they are not sufficient enough to guaranty a long-term commitment toward physical activity.
