Effets de l’improvisation théâtrale sur le système lexico-sémantique et la pensée divergente

Abstract : Improvisational theater (improv) is a full artistic practice, whose fame is growing day by day. Although it is applied in various fields : education, medicine, therapy, management, etc., its effects on psychological, behavioral and cognitive processes have been the subject of few scientific publications to date. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of improv on divergent thinking and language, in particular the lexico-semantic system. Twenty people were recruited for this study and divided into two groups : improv (n=12), composed of novice improvisers, and control (n=8), composed of people not registered in an improv workshop. The pre- and post-experimental evaluations took place at 3-month intervals (12 weeks). They consisted of 2 Alternative Uses Task and 3 Verbal Fluency tasks (semantics, literals and actions). The analyzes were based on quantitative and qualitative criteria, according to the approaches of Guilford (1967) and Troyer et al. (1998). A positive effect of the improv on the originality, and on the number of semantic switchings and clusters realized in actions fluency tests, was found. Our results suggest that improv introduces novice improvisers to find more solutions to resolve problems than control subjects, and to diversify the means used to achieve them.
