La résistance des familles populaires aux verdicts scolaires : le cas d'élèves de seconde dans un lycée de centre ville

Abstract : This paper shows in detail the working-class families' resistance towards school sentences. This study is based in a quantitative analysis of career guidance choices of a group of pupils from a favoured high school, in a large French town. Families' resistance can take many different forms, from an objection to the provisional recommandation of the class council to an opposition to the final decision of the headmaster. These practices, however peripheral and linked to a particular context, are designated to support the working-class children's education. They confirm the fact that the working-class families does not lack drive regarding the school system. However, the analysis of the working-class pupils' interviews points out the fact that the use of objections and opposition to school sentences is related to pupil's academic career and to the social attributes of their families. More generally, it is part of a geographic context which influences the working-class relation to school.
