Pourquoi et comment parler d’éducation thérapeutique chez la personne âgée : rôle du pharmacien d’officine

Abstract : We have a role to play towards the elderly people, quite often taking several medicines for a chronic disease, in order to improve their relation with drug treatments. The function of a dispensing chemist is multi-purpose with new missions, which permit a constant and beneficial evolution of the profession. Therapeutic education is part of it. But what does that mean concretely ? To accept one’s disease and live with it are two points that therapeutic education can help improve. How to react, from behind the desk, at the possible difficulties the elderly people can feel towards their disease, and also at the taking of their treatment ? How can we, at our level, improve the regular observance of the treatment? Specific programs, which have demonstrated their efficiency, exist and show the impact that therapeutic education can have in our society, and also the importance of multidisciplinary relations (chemists, practitioners, nurses…). The fact that we are considered as actors of proximity is an advantage. I considered, therefore, the setting up of a workshop on therapeutic education, targeting precise pathologies. However, as a preliminary, a thorough formation would be essential for the dispensing chemist. The purpose of this work is to assess the impact which the new missions can have on the elderly people.
