Comment les femmes médecins généralistes installées à La Réunion vivent leur grossesse ? Étude qualitative faite auprès de 14 femmes médecins généralistes par entretiens semi-dirigés individuels

Abstract : Introduction: the law of June 1st, 2006 provided the alignment of the length and compensation of liberal female doctors’ maternity leave to that of female salaried practitioners. Despite the introduction of this law, difficulties still persist for female practitioners in France. How do female general practitioners in Reunion Island experience their pregnancy ? Objectives: describe and analyse the professional management of female general practitioners in Reunion Island during their pregnancy and highlight the professional and personal consequences. Methods: qualitative research with semi-structured interviews of 14 female general practitioners in Reunion Island. Results: during pregnancy, the female general practitioner keeps her normal schedule. She has to plan her maternity leave by looking for a locum and saving money. The loss of income during maternity leave is the main difficulty found in this study. Maternity leave compensation is not enough to support professional and personal expenses. Female general practitioners enjoy the full maternity leave period but sometimes they feel like they can’t fully concentrate themselves to their pregnancy. When they go back to work, they have the same schedule as before their pregnancy, which makes continued breastfeeding complicated. Potential regulations of working time make it possible to balance work and family life and ensure a good quality of life. Conclusion: maternity social protection for female general practitioners should change for a better maternity care such as providing higher compensation for maternity leave and for sick leave during pregnancy. Further measures such as an assistance to locum search and a better access to social rights during pregnancy should also be considered.
