Étude du vécu des soignant(e)s dans la prise en charge des patient(e)s en situation de handicap moteur au sein du Centre Pénitentiaire de Bordeaux-Gradignan

Abstract : Context: physical disabilities are more prevalent in prison than in general population, moreover, french inmate population is ageing. The Bordeaux-Gradignan Pénitenciary Center (CP) houses almost 680 inmates and was put into service en 1967. Our purpose was to describe how care workers handle patients with motor disabilities in this particular jail. Method : We undertook a qualitative survey. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten care givers who worked in the Bordeaux-Gradignan CP between mars and july 2018. Datas were analysed with the help of N-Vivo software. Results: care workers reported being dependant on the prison administration in their work. They have to adapt to security requirement which lead to restrictions of their time and space, and also to a lack of material equipment in the care of patients with motor disabilities. Social care is essential to fund material and human assistance. Physical rehabilitation, treatment of medical and psychiatric comorbidities and also the organisation of the patients release are major issues in their care. The participants formulated the maladjustment of this CP infrastructure for disabled persons. They often expressed negative feelings concerning those barriers and described the hardness of life conditions for those vulnerable inmates. Conclusion: the study results highlight the interdisciplinarity and the complexity at stake in the care of patients with motor disabilities in the Bordeaux-Gradignan CP. There is a hope that the difficulties due to inappropriate infrastructure faced by patients and care workers, will improve with the center reconstruction, planned for 2022.
