Contraception et grossesses non désirées chez les jeunes femmes (18-25 ans) de l'île de Maré en Nouvelle-Calédonie : une enquête qualitative

Abstract : Objective: To explore knowledge, representations, practices and obstacles about contraception among young women on the island of Maré (New Caledonia). Method : Qualitative study by semi-structured interviews with women aged 15 to 25 from Maré. Women were recruited during a consultation in the dispensary to constitute a reasoned sample, in maximum variation. The analysis of the verbatim was done following the grounded theory. Results : 17 young women were met. Their life stories were marked by unwanted pregnancies. One in three women had effective contraception. The obstacles found were those generally described but also the existence of a taboo on the subject and a lack of confidentiality at the dispensary. Conclusion : To avoid contraceptive failure, access to information must be facilitated, confidentiality guaranteed and general practitioners in the clinics involved.
