L'exposition à cette pollution est associée à un risque augmenté de pathologies infectieuses et constitue une « menace pour la santé humaine » d'après un rapport de l'Agence Européenne pour l'Environnement. La cavité buccale représente une porte d'entrée et un réservoir pour les bactéries pathogènes. Cependant, leur présence et leur influence sur la flore de l'écosystème buccal chez des personnes en contact prolongé avec ces eaux polluées n'ont
